Loss of power during first few accelerations after start-up 900 1992

My 1992 960 (1993 960 engine) has been having a loss of power issue during it's first few accelerations after the car is started, but at no other time. I can accelerate for a little bit and can get into a higher gear, but then the power suddenly drops out, and I mash the pedal to the floor but nothing will change. The tachometer doesnt seem to reflect the loss of power and seems to remain at the rpm the power was lost at. The loss of power will last for 5 to 10 seconds, and then power will rapidly be restored, resulting in a surge of acceleration if the pedal is pressed down. If the throttle is held at the same point on its first trip or two after start-up, the car will accelerate, lose power, and then regain power again, making it seem like the pedal is being moved, but not.

It seems like the engine isn't getting fuel or isnt getting air, but I think it could also have something to do with the electronic choking. I have no real clues as to what it could be though. The strange part is that the car will only do this on the first 2 or 3 times it accelerates after it is started up.

I've been getting 2-1-4 from the OBD system for some time now (RPM sensor signal missing spradically), but this has only started occuring in the past month. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my problem or not.

I dont know exactly what the problem is here, and would like to before I take the car anywhere. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

spedboy

do you have a fuel pressure gauge? i would check pressure(cold,at start up) and replace air and fuel filters to start with. and what sped said.a clogged fuel filter may hinder full fuel flow at start up.

Dear spedboy,

Good p.m. and hope this finds you well. This one is cheap and easy to fix. You need to replace the RPM/Crank Sensor. It sits on the bell housing - the round aluminum housing - just behind the engine. To see the RMP sensor, stand on the passenger side of the engine bay, just forward of the hood hinge.

Look at the rear corner of the engine block. You will see the point where the engine block (orange) meets the bell housing (aluminum). At the 10 o'clock position (with 12 o'clock being straight up), you'll see the sensor.

See the FAQs for the procedure. Be gentle: the sensor is secured by a single hex head machine screw. The part can be had from www.fcpgroton.com. Should take you no more than 20 mins to replace, assuming you have socket tools (10mm socket and several extensions).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

In the 960 it is not easy to get to. It is directly behind the middle of the cylinder head. You will need a long extension with a torx 25 on the end. If you live anywhere near the salt belt good luck getting it to come out of the housing. I would clean the conn. first. It is the white conn. or in your case it is probably a dingy yellow. Dissconect and clean and then apply silicone grease to the terminals and see what happens. Pauli
