revolutionary scrapes 900 1991

afternoon all,

the symptoms:
metallic-like scraping sounds corresponding directly to the revolutions made by the rear axle. seems to be coming from the driver-side rear wheel.

so far:
it's been going on for a few weeks. had the rear wheel off a couple weekends ago, replacing shocks and springs and didn't see anything unusual, though i will check again tomorrow.

possible solutions/question:
could it be lack of proper pad greasing?

any comments are much appreciated.

thanks
gkl

When I didn't pass inspection one year with my 960 due to the parking brake not holding, I went to my mechanic. He found that the parking brake shoe/cable was binding; he did a quick fix, but told me that after I passed, I shouldn't use it until we'd thoroughly repaired it. A couple months later, either my wife or I inadvertently used it and a short time later, accelerating from a stop we heard a terrible "bang" from the rear. Naturally I stopped, but since I was in a bad spot, I decided I had try to pull away and I was able to and drive home. As I did, my daughter heard what she said sounded like a piece of metal hitting the pavement. Next day at my mechanic's, he showed me that the parking brake shoe or cable in my right rear brake assembly had literally bound up the rotor and as I accelerated the explosion was a piece being torn out of the rotor. The hole was the size of a quarter easily. Since I had to in order to pass inspection, we ended up replacing rotor, parking brake caliper and cable. Mechanic claims that this is a frequent issue on RWD volvos, 7 and 9 series at least. He has a very busy shop and sees hundereds of volvos, and I respect his knowledge. Good luck.

    thanks for the replies, guys.

    Garyh:
the pads looked to be ok when i last saw them. they've got a few thousand more miles on them, but i didn't try separating them from the rotor. i'll be trying that tomorrow.

    jbowers:
now that you mention it, i have started to drive off before, only to notice the parking brake light. this has happened a few times. each time i did notice that there wasn't as much resistance to foward motion as i would expect. i'll have to check this also, tomorrow.

hopefully i can come up with something.

any more replies are greatly appreciated!

Is your caliper sticking? See if you can push the brake pad (thus caliper piston) back from the rotor.

I assume you checked the brake pads to make sure they are not worn?

My first thoughts are that your parking brake is comming apart. Do your parking brakes still work normally?

I've actually had the friction material rust off the metal part of the shoes.
