bubbling trouble 900 1992

Hi
after puting my 2.9 back together i get big bubbles from the overflow tank
when it first starts. it will eventually push it out the cap. then then the fluid level drops rapidly and if you top it off it is ok no bubbles.
Any ideas what would cause this behavior.
thanks

    hi
Yes I did change the head gasket .
    when doing a valve job.
but no mixing of oil or coolent that I can detect.
Of course the real bind is that i am experiencing
pouros block syndrome. so this might be letting air into the system.

    thanks
    Ken

    Dear living in the past,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. What work did you do?

If you had to drain the cooling system (i.e., if you replaced radiator, heater hoses, water pump, thermostat, etc.) it is entirely possible that there is air trapped in the system.

Here's how "to burp" the car, to purge trapped air. Find a hill (angled driveway will do, or put the car up on ramps, if you're in flat terrain).

Let the engine run until the temp gauge needle is in the middle. Set the heater control for "Max Heat".

Put the car nose up and let it run for 5 minutes. Then, put it nose down, and let it run for 5 minutes. You should see major air bubbles in the coolant overflow tank.

Top up with coolant/water (50/50) and you should be fine. This should not have to be done again.

If, on the other hand, you did a headgasket, and there are major bubbles in the coolant, this suggests that the headgasket is leaking. Expect to find oil in the coolant and vice versa.

I'm betting you didn't do a headgasket job, so above suggestions might be useful.

    Hope some of this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
