How do you turn the AC on / off? Plus, likely causes for my Elec. Gremlins? 200 1984

Ok, so I've got a 1984 244GL. It's got AC installed. I know that the freon is empty, but I want to find out if my compressor works.

How the hell do you turn the AC on? There's no little button that says "AC" on it. There's the regular temp control panel, and then next to the hazard lights there's the knob to change the temperature, but no immediately evident way to turn it on and off. Am I just missing something? Or does the compressor run all the time if you've got the fan turned on?

Next, a list of a few other electrical issues I've got, and hopefully they're common issues, that others will know how to fix:

1. No reverse lights. Bulbs are fine.

2. No instrument cluster lights. I haven't pulled it to look at the bulbs yet. The rheostat works, and the lights on the console and the clock are fine, though, so I wonder if it's just the bulbs?

3. No gas gauge. Actually, this is not precisely true - it did work at one point, for a total of about ten minutes, during which my left brake light did not work. Only time either one of those has exhibited that behavior. Do they share a common ground?

4. Intermittent tachometer failure. It works sometimes, doesn't work other times. Sometime's it's just a momentary dip of the needle before resumption of normal operation, other times it stays off for 10-15 minutes. Obviously it's a loose wire, but are there any obvious locations to look (aside from the pack of the instrument cluster?)

Thanks!!!
