Seat BURNING from heater 700 1989

From combing the board I see others have experienced the excessively hot rear-end from faulty seat heaters.

I noticed a small hole in my seat recently and after closer look, saw it was from a burn. The last few times I'd used the seat heater there was a hot spot on my leg.

I unclipped the front of the seat and felt around the area of the hole and I could feel a small cavity (from being burnt) + I was able to poke a bare wire up through the hole. D'oh!

For now, I live in a warm enough climate that the 30A fuse will simply have to come out and stay out until this is fixed.

Any recommendations on how to fix this? Help appreciated.

Short circuit in the grid. Follow the FAQ instructions to remove the seat and seat skin.

Thanks Stephen;

I read through the Interior 700 FAQ's--both removing seat skin and also removing entire bottom seat.

I was able to lift the seat/skin right off the base but lost my enthusiasm when I saw lots of the hog clips (as they are called in FAQ).

Assuming I get the skin off, it the heater mat repairable with a loose, bare wire or do I need to replace whole unit.

I replaced the backrest heater in my 740. There was a crease in it that caused it to open. It didn't look repairable so I ended up getting a newpad from volvo (borton). You can used plastic cable ties when you put it back together instead of hog rings.

BTW the volvo service manual has excellent pictures on how to do all this and is reasonably priced.

Paul;

Thanks for the help.

I'd think I can remember the tie straps instead of the hog rings but it could be awhile before I get to this job...I'll use the Save message feature. Good tip.
