Seat back heater grid - urgent 200

I'm part way through repairing the foam in my '89 240 seat back.
My question is on the seat heater grid.

I'm not sure how it was supposed to be installed - I'm not confident that it was "OEM" before I opened it.

Is the grid supposed to be attached to the seat with clips? The grid was not attached to the back at all, only by the red wires. Grid was right between the seat fabric and the foam. There's a cutout in the left side of the grid's plastic frame that looks like it might hold a thermostat, but there's nothing in there. Any known purpose for the opening?

Top edge of grid will be near the wire rode/hog ring setup, about 1/2 way up the front of the seat back. Does the grid get clipped to that? Or is it supposed to be loose inside the seat upholstery? I'm planning on using plastic wire ties to replace the hog rings.

Thanks!

Seat back heater grid - urgent 200

I ran a small piece of string thrugh the plastic and then to the Wire that holds the Hog rings in the middle of the backrest. This insured it wouldn't slip down over time.
I don't think I took a clear shot of that but look here anyhow. Look to the left of the site. See 'Tony's seat rebuild" or something like that. It may help

Thats all normal. The thermostat is on the grid in the seat bottom and the heaters are in series, so only one thermostat is needed. They use the same plastic frame for both grids so the seat back one is an extra that is left empty.

One thing I would check is that the tape that holds the wires in place on the grid has not dried out. The wires will shift and get bunched up if the tape is shot. Its not so important on the seat back, but on the seat bottom the wires can shift away from the thermostat. This can cause the heater to overheat and burn a hole in your apolstery.

      Thanks again.

I didn't open up the seat bottom at all. It feels comfortable, and the seat heater seemed to work OK when I tried it. My wife appreciates (I think) that I was able to spend some time away from my car projects today. I kept this job halfway under control in terms of time, which is good. If I have to open up the seat bottom later, I'll know to check the tapes and thermostat.

Based on what I can recall when I rebuilt my seat, that sounds normal - OEM. Assuming mine was right when I opened it up....

No clips, just 2 red wires. I too thought that a little strange, but it all went back together just fine.

My foam had the opening, no thermostat. Maybe Volvo built some seat heaters with a thermostat attached?

I put my grid back loose, just the way it came. No problems so far.

Don't worry about this stuff too much, it'll all go back together fine. Just make sure the grid is where it should be when you put the cover back on and tighten the wire ties.

    Voila - done!

      Thanks.

I used some long cable ties to clip it loosely to that horizontal stiff wire, half way up the back.

Good to hear that yours looked like mine did.

I found 1 bolt loose, securing the back assembly to the seat bottom frame.
I did a lot or gluing on the seat foam. Seat feels pretty comfortable now.
I haven't tested the seat heater yet, but I think it will work OK.
