Seat back heater grid - urgent 200

I'm part way through repairing the foam in my '89 240 seat back.
My question is on the seat heater grid.

I'm not sure how it was supposed to be installed - I'm not confident that it was "OEM" before I opened it.

Is the grid supposed to be attached to the seat with clips? The grid was not attached to the back at all, only by the red wires. Grid was right between the seat fabric and the foam. There's a cutout in the left side of the grid's plastic frame that looks like it might hold a thermostat, but there's nothing in there. Any known purpose for the opening?

Top edge of grid will be near the wire rode/hog ring setup, about 1/2 way up the front of the seat back. Does the grid get clipped to that? Or is it supposed to be loose inside the seat upholstery? I'm planning on using plastic wire ties to replace the hog rings.

Thanks!
