Valvetrain noisy, put allow mani on and slight problems... 140-160

The valvetrain had been getting noisy over the past couple hundred miles(at 1005 now)... I'm going out to adjust them in a bit and then drive up to portland for some other tuning and stripping and stuff.

The compression was 165 180 180 180 before we took off the carbs and combined manifold.

We ran into the problem with differing thicknesses for the flanges, and we used some half washers left over from the Weber manifold that i was using, and then ground down two other areas with a grinder to make them match the intake. Now with it all bolted up and running, there's a definite exhaust leak. Last night when it was first started up you could hear it and you could see something smoking or burning off. It didn't really smell like the exhaust, so i'm assuming it was something burning off. The sound was there though, i'll retorque it when i go back out... We did use a little polisher type thing that's a little rougher than polish to clean up the mounting side(to the block). It's more complicated than that but i don't have time.

I'll talk again later tonight after i try and work some stuff out for tomorrow's events...

Be careful tightening them manifolds... awful easy to break the studs...then you'll really be pissed. Perhaps your half warshers weren't exactly the right thickness? I'd check that first.

When I put my webers on, the intake manifold was much thinner than the exhaust... I successfully ground down the exhaust manifold where the studs are with a dremel. Worked great, though it took about $20 worth of grinding stones...

Electical short causing the ignition can't be too hard to trace. Gotta be either before the coil, or between the coil and the points.

If its before the coil, you can always just run a wire from the battery directly to the coil to get you down the road. Don't forget to disconnect it when you stop... of course, it would be hard to forget, as that's the only way to turn you car off.

If its twixt the coil and the points, Just check all around to find something wrong... usually inside the distributor.

Good luck with it, and no heavy drinking. Fun as it may be, it doesn't bode well for productivity.

    *tear* 140-160

Holy crap i'm gonna cry. I've done soo freaking much in the past two weeks, and now i'm just throwing it away. Some stupid electrical short is causing the motor to shut off, so i'm not going. Well, I'm not taking my car anyway.(it stranded me twice on the way to portland, while on the outskirts of corvallis) Wow. And i didn't figure out the other stuff either, so it's not just the little short that i could probably find in not too many minutes. I've had a hell of a two weeks, i need some time off. Going to go CHILL with some friends for now.

Andrew, give me a call, i want a ride...

remember the wise words of John Belushi 140-160

"My advice to you is to start drinking heavily".

John said that, many years ago, and not too far away from where you are now I think Kyle. It is just a car, just dumb metal, and you have had quite a go at it lately. You're right, take a break. A few beers from now and it will be possible again to enjoy the car. Just don't drive it....

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

      Rhys

=D Yeah, i coulda just had some to drink, but i turned it down. The playing tennis for a while and watching a movie afterwards with some friends did the job. I think i'm going to get up in 4 hours and try to work some stuff out and possibly still go. But just think, if i don't go,(in my car anyway) i'll save $100 and i'll not risk breaking it. I want to go though, you know i do, that's what a lot of this work was for...
