I imagine you could just remove the stock wiring from the coil and drop in a distributor of your choosing - or even go distributorless.

The only problem I could see is the ignition computer complaining about a 'bad' coil, in which case you might be able to fool it by putting a suitable resistor in where the coil used to go.

The stock setup is reasonably good. If you just want to change the advance curves that could be done by modifying the timing maps in the ECU's EPROM.

As noted, not an easy swap. Much much easier to swap the whole car- good ones are out there for cheap. I just found a decent 89 244 that was going to be a parts car... no rust! I'm gonna drive it. At 212K it'll go a lot longer.
My 87 is getting rusty ... want to swap?

You can't do that without changing the ECU and related wiring harnesses. At that point you'll probably also need a new air mass meter and possibly some other sensors as well. If the ignition system bothers you that much, your best bet is to sell your 1989 car and buy a 1988 or earlier car.
