Auxilary Air Valve 200

Hi,
I'm suspecting my fourth partially dead AAV after only five years of Volvos. Are these things really so prone to failure?
In my Haynes manual all testing consist of is checking for a clear passage through it when cold but it doesn't say how much or how cold.

When on the car at approx 15C there only a small gap. When in the freezer at -20C it's less than half open. When starting the engine and the first five minutes of driving there are clear symptoms of if not being open enogh.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

You may be able to open it a bit more. Loosen the 7mm nut and carefully pry the stud/nut "North West" away from the air passage tube. (Look thru the air tube as you pry on the stud/nut, to see the effect on the opening.)

If it seems stuck, it may already at the extreme of this adjustment and open as far as it will go. Try squeezing it towards the air tube to see if it moves. The as new (-100) AAV I'm fiddling with moves a bit less than 2mm overall.

I suppose you could open it too far, making it too lean for cold running, but see what trial-and-error will do for you.

P.S. What are your cold-running (too rich) symptoms?

You don't say what year your car is. But in general the air valves aren't usually a problem. They do get gummed up after a long time, but you don't have to worry it about it very much. I usually clean mine every other year, when I clean the TB. And that seems to be more than enough for the air valve. Just get some carb cleaner and Q-tips, and keep spraying and wiping it up inside until the Q-tips come out clean.

Some of the ones I have seem to be gummed up. I wonder if spraying some
carb cleaner/starting fluid into it and shaking it would loosen or remove
any of the gum and help it work better....
Can you beat this problem by setting the idle faster?

No, faster idle isn't temperature dependent so it would run fast when hot.

I'll see if some WD40 will cure it.

      Cheers

I would recommend against WD40. What you need is something to clean it
out, not gum it up (which WD40 will do when it dries). Use carb cleaner,
        starting fluid, lacquer thinner etc.
