Auxilary Air Valve 200

Hi,
I'm suspecting my fourth partially dead AAV after only five years of Volvos. Are these things really so prone to failure?
In my Haynes manual all testing consist of is checking for a clear passage through it when cold but it doesn't say how much or how cold.

When on the car at approx 15C there only a small gap. When in the freezer at -20C it's less than half open. When starting the engine and the first five minutes of driving there are clear symptoms of if not being open enogh.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Henrik Morsing
