Is it my ECT? Cold start prob and radiator fan always runs. 900 1993

It takes at least 4-5 tries to get my engine to start. When it does, I have to rev it for another 30 seconds to keep it from stalling. After that it runs great. Restarts fine up to another 3 to 5 hrs. Also, the radiator fan always runs when car is on. I have checked the plugs, wires, and replaced the dist cap and rotor. The ext fuel pump and filter are 3 months old. I don't think it's in the fuel line because I've tried priming it (turning ignition 3-4 times to make sure fuel gets to the rail. But I do think it's fuel related due to the reving necessary after start.

I have checked out other posts with ECT probs, but they all seem to indicate a false cold reading, leading to a flooded engine. I don't smell any fuel, though and since the fan immediately kicks on, I am thinking a false warm reading. My temp guage seems to be operating properly, starts at 0 and warms up to 12 o'clock in a few minutes. I am getting a 1-2-3 (ECT) code and a 1-2-1 (air mass meter) code. I have seen a lot of posts, but not with this particular problem.

Am I stretching to link the cold start prob with the fan prob? I did a diagnostic on #2 port to see if that would fix the fan...no dice.

I unplugged the ECT connector and found no probs visually. I pulled it and put it back another 5 times in case the contacts were poor. I am a total novice under the hood and have no diagnostic tools. Any advice would be helpful.

fathom5 -

I had the same problem about 1 month back. COld starts were terrible. Takes 4-10 cranks before I can get an idle that wouldn't die off. OBD showed 1-1-3 - Fuel Injectors. ECT changed, Air Mass Meter, Fuel regulator changed for diagnostic purposes. No cure. Then I noticed that if I shifted straight into either R or D upon starting, the idle will be stable. If I shifted it back to P or N, the engine would die off. ON informing my regular mech of this, he suggested that it was the brake vaccuum servo that was faulty. Apparently, common for 940's here in Malaysia. Changed that and problem solved.

Dear fathom5 (30 feet),

May this find you well. Have you checked for On Board Diagnostic (OBD) codes?

On the driver side of the engine bay (US/Canada models), in front of the strut tower, there are two small, black boxes. See the FAQs, under FEATURES (above) for a "how to" on using these code readers.

Once you press the button on the code reader box, the light will blink slowly. If you get "blink" - "blink" - "blink", (1-1-1) then all's well. If you get "blink" - "blink""blink" - "blink" (1-2-1), that indicates there's some sort of problem. See the code list.

Post back on your findings.

Yours faithfully,

spook
