Transmission has been slipping. Also when I am at a light it sometimes surges forward? Is this an easy fix or a tranny overall?

Make certain you have enough fluid. Check fluid level with the engine running. If level is fine, I think you are going to need a new (used) transmission. It sounds like a low fluid problem however.
