240 trailing arm bush tool 200

Does anyone have a trailing arm bushing tool that they would be willing to rent/loan me? I really don't want to buy the tool since I just need it to use once on my '86 240. Is replacing these bushings difficult with the tool?

Just a note. If you buy poly bushings you won't need the tool. Those who have gone that route say it's is a lot easier physically.

How do I get the old bushings out? If it's easier, I'll use the poly bushings.
Thanks,
Dave

I posted this procedure here:

That should help you. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I'll definately go with the poly bushes. Do any of the other rear bushings usually need replacement? I've also got to replace my front A arm bushings. Do I have to have these pressed in?

Cheers,
Dave

The other rear suspension bushings may need replacement, but the one that commonly fails is the rear trailing arm bushing (where the trailing arm bolts to the axle.)

I believe most of the other bushings have to be pressed in at a shop unless you have a good press. I think they can all be removed from the car and taken to a shop. I haven't done any other bushings, so I don't know for sure.

Its easier with a press but you can do it with a heavy duty vice....

Now that's a vice. 200 1981

Hmmm. Now, would smoking be considered a heavy-duty vice? Maybe drinking would be heavier-duty than smoking. I know drugs would qualify, but they're illegal......

Okay, you meant "vise." Thought I'd have a little fun with that.

Consider making the tool for about $20. Check this site.

Hello!

As far as I know, you can rent it from IPD (www.ipdusa.com). Judging to their printed catalog, it will cost $48, but you need to give them a refundable security deposit in amount of $165. Visit their site (or call) for details.

Sincerely,
Dmitriy.
