New 242 4 me! 200 1984

They do keep following me home. OK, well, I drove 50 miles to find this one, but how many 2-doors do you see any more in the Rust Belt?

Actually I just answered an ad in our state Trader paper, the Bargain News (www.bargainnews.com) and sure enough it was still available. Cool! It came with extra snow tires, a full set (5!!) of Virgos, a loooong service history, a copy of Volvo Performance Handbook and a mint Bentley manual. How much more can you ask?

The negatives? Well, it has a blown head gasket, broken odometer, and it's a bit ratty in the right rear fenderwell, as usual. But the good things outweigh the bad: solid floors, good rockers, supposedly only 100K on it, KYBs all around, IPD sways (and cool IPD emblems on the fenders!!), upper strut braces, performance exhaust, tach, and a working Kenwood stereo. When's the last time you bought a 240 with a working stereo?? I think I'm gonna like this car...

Coil Warm But No Spark on 83 240 200

Shrug.

From your first post my impression was that you were using a timing light to verify spark. I suggested you just pull a plug wire and hold it near a ground.

Your next post again indicated that you were using a timing light to determine spark. But since the timing light would only show spark at the plug it is connected to, if the distributor rotor was not turning you wouldn't detect spark. As you hadn't indicated that you had gone back in and checked the timing belt, there was a possibility that it was loose (belt tensioner) or broken. So I suggested you check for rotor movement.

Contrary to your statement, "The rotor is TURNING. (which it would anyway even if the belt was broken)", the rotor will not turn if the belt is broken as the belt drives the idler wheel/pulley which turns the dist. rotor.

Anyhow, I gave it a shot.

Not too damn many, I'll bet. Rarely do I see another 2 door in my neck of the woods and then they're usually all beat to hell. So I'm glad you were able to rescue this one. Definitely worth the 50 mile trip, trailer rental included. My hat would be off to you if I were wearing one.

Thanks, I know I'll have fun with it!
(got a feeling my wife's going to get in it, and they'll be off touring New England together...)

Rob:

I like it!! Wish I had a way to go get cars that don't run! I am looking to buy Volvo number 60 right now - bidding on this ebay car!

Was looking at this one up by you - felt sort of sad for the owner -looks like a $500 car to me!

Eww. That 850 is going to be very lucky if anyone bids $1000 for it. A 93 850 just isn't a car you want. A basket case 93 is a highly undesirable car. He's going to keep his little project a long time I think.
I particularly like the rust in the cylinder bores.

Very nice. You forgot to tell us how much you gave for it! With a list of goodies like that, I might have broken my $500 rule. My '91 $300 wagon had a working stereo, but it was the first one! You are going to like driving this one, I bet. Too bad it doesn't appear to have the B21FT

Ahh I was wondering if anyone was gonna ask. I did NOT break my rule, and in fact the car was listed at "$500 OBO". I did have to pay for the trailer though, and dinner and gas for my friend and his truck. :)
That plus the headgasket kit will put it over the $500 mark but I have to consider the extra manuals as a bonus that offsets that. I think I could sell the Volvo Performance Handbook for $30 or so if I wanted to. (I don't want to!)

I got the package for $400 and I think it's pretty reasonable all in all.

Hmm I think The Wing will look better on this one!

See, That's why we collect Volvo parts! I had an OEM 245 dog gate floating around here for a year or so. It was missing some of the hardware so I couldn't install it. Lo and behold, the $300 '91 245 had all the attaching hardware but no gate. A match made in heaven! Definitely put the wing on the 242, I can't wait to see it!

Nice looking car, NA I assume? You didnt mention "turbo or intercooler". What do you mean "rattly right fender well"? Could this be the answer to my mystery noise on the 245 GLT?

Man, how can you afford insurance?

I just had to sell one of my 4 (now 3) 240s for that reason.

...well, probably doesn't help that I'm 19, and thus look like a risk to most insurance companies...

But still. That's quite impressive.

Look into a thing called a "broadform named driver" policy. I drive any car I want for $450 year/liability only.

Exactly. Just get the minimum to be on the road, and be safe and responsible.
Insurance is the business of selling you nothing. Buy as little as possible.

Well, in Connecticut, where everyone is trying to sue everyone, I prefer to be more fully covered. The insurance often does cost more than the car for the year though.
I have a house to think about as well- if I were sued over an accident that myself or my wife were involved in, I could stand to lose everything.

I carry a pretty high limit for that reason, but no collision coverage on the cars. Liability only.
