aluminum wheels 1985 240 sedan and '88 240 wagon 200 1985

I have an 1985 240 sedan that will be junked. I have a 1988 240 wagon that is good with two bent rims. They both have aluminum wheels that look identical except that the wagon has this pin on the hub that needs to line up with a hole on the wheel, the '85 rims don't have that hole,

1) Can I swap them?

2) What's the point of that pin?

Thanks

As Smitty says, you can remove that pin if your wheels have no locating hole. Replace it with an M6 bolt or leave it out. I've removed them to fit Virgos to all of my 240s at sometime or other. The Virgo rim does not have a locating hole, and will not bolt on flush if the pin is not removed.

There's no problem swapping them. Just remove the alignment pin from the hub with a 10mm wrench. The pin is to assure reinstallation of the wheel in the same orientation (clocking) as when it was removed; if the wheel and tire have been balanced on the car (i.e., along with brake rotor) this preserves the balance. In practice, I don't know anyone who balances wheels on the car these days, so it's a "don't worry about it."
