Starter Replacement - 93 245 - How hard? 200

A friend with a 93 245 needs a starter. How hard is it to get it out of a 93 245. I own a 92 940, and it looks like no picnic to get at the bolts, if the setup the same. Any comments or hints? What size socket is needed?

Thanks!

Steve C

It's the top bolt that is the problem, and everybody makes a big deal about using the right socket, swivels, long extensions, etc. Actually I have always found it easy if you use the right tool, and that is what we (UK) call a ring spanner - ie a spanner with a closed end, with lots of serations so that it fits in 12 different positions not just 6.
Use this from on top, but on backwards, so that the handle angles forwards towards the engine. Sacrifice the spanner and cut the handle short if necessary to gain clearance. Use a lever or a hammer to get the bolt started. Once started it is easy.
Be careful loosening the thick electric cable to the starter. If the nut is seized and rusted tight it can rip the bolt out of the starter before it will turn.

its more contortionism than anything; its actually quite easy. disconnect battery neg., undo wiring and have a blast getting the bolts (15mm on a 75 but i think starters are all the same on 240s) off.
good luck.

Changed the starter in my '89. I think it was 15mm. Didn't find it too hard. It's a combination of stretching from under the hood and going underneath. Once you get the old one out you'll see how to put the new one in. You might want to put the DS front on a stand or block to ease the access to the area when going underneath.
Don't forget to dissconnect the battery first.

Dunno about the 93 specifically but I couldn't get at that second bolt on my 85 and gave up. I'm sure someone has had the right combo of wrenches for the job but it's definitely not easy.
