Bet you haven't heard this problem before..... 200

Hello fellow Brickers,

I have a very intersting problem that just came up. Everytime, when the car is running, I hit the wiper lever in to whatever position, the wipers act normally, maybe a little slow, and all the idiots lights come on, the engine dies, and the fuel pump fuse blows (The 16 amp fuse). I have no earthly idea where to start, I have added a few electric goodys (amps, equalizers, ect) But I checked all my wiring and that was a few months ago, so very sure its not that. Please say you have heared of this, and know what to do, cause I don't. Also, when I dissconnect the power to the wiper motor, all is well, When i remove the fuse to the wipers, all is well. It very weird that it would blow the fuel pump fuse, and not the wiper fuse, once again I am very confused and have ran out of ideas to try. Help....

Thanks in advance,
Blake

yes I have. 200

Had exactly the same problem with a VW rabbit a few years ago.
I solved it by grounding the wiper motor to the body, If you don't want a custom harness, check the Bently chassis ground diagram for the wiper motor and reground

I would check the wiper motor relay that is found ot the left of the brake pedal underneath the carpet. If you have a wagon you may find two of those realys there since once is for the front and one is for the back. If my memory serves me right the white relay is for the the tailgate wiper and the green relay is for the front windshield wiper. Sometimes there is a water leak at the windshield or where the hood latch enters the car and that waters goes inside those wiper relays and causes all kinds of shorts / electrical problems. Take a look down there and see what you find. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

This behavior — activate one electrical item and it works (or doesn't) but other electrical items also come alive or misbehave — is almost always the result of one (or more) bad ground connections, usually in the circuit you're tyring to use. I'd start by opening, cleaning, and reassembling the ground connections involved in the wiper motor circuit, both at the wiper motor and the steering column switch.

I don't think it's the engine compartment wiring harness, as the wiper motor wiring doesn't (I think) go through it.

Do you own a 85, 86 or 87 240?

Engine wiring harness is "biodegradable." If you don't own these years, then I don't know what it is...other than a bad wiper motor

IIRC, I think the wiring harness problem goes back to at least 1981 and maybe 1980 too.
