refinishing virgo wheels 200

I brought a wheel with me to my mother-in-laws while we're visiting during the Christmas holidays. Today, I cleaned it up real good and used wet sandpaper to finish off the paint imperfections. I also used a dremmel tool to get into some of the hard to get to spots on the back side of the wheel. Steel wool is good too...used it alot. I'm getting good results. Wheel is looking smooth and clean. I've got primer, paint, and clearcoat to put on tomorrow or the next day. I'm going to use Rustoleum 7715 (aluminum color) as the paint.

I bet I won't spend as much time on the other three wheels when I get home. :)

I've refinished a lot of wheels. If the finish is pretty good, I wet sand with 400 to start. If it's rough, chipped/flaking, or has brake dust buildup, I start with 220 wet and then go to 400 wet. 220 will also smooth curb rash quite well. Wipe clean when wet, wipe again with paint thinner just before painting to clean of all possible contamination, and spray with wheel paint. I've had good results with Dupli-Color silver, graphite, and white wheel paint, as well as some Krylon spray paint I used recently. I've painted 10 Virgos, 4 760 alloys, and 4 Titans.

Does anybody know where I can get a set of virgos.

I have an extra set that i am going to have media blasted and then put on a full polish and clearcoat. I've only seen one other car with a full polish set and they were dazzling. They're going on my coupe.

Now,....I'd like to see that when you get it done. full polish set w/ clearcoat...I'm assuming you're talking about taking all the paint off and just having the aluminum ...sounds great....got any pics of it?

Funny how that works, doesn't it? You spend a lot of time getting the first really like perfect, then a little less on the second, and so forth, until the last, it's like "Oh, F-it, it looks fine enough now!".

So the trick is not to do them all at once, but just some, take a break, then come back to do some more.

-- Kane ... not that I've ever spent that much time on a rim before painting. If the stains aren't scrubbing off with a wire brush, then it's prolly not going so scrub off when painted over.

I'm hoping mine look as good as yours. The reason that I'm spending alot of time on this one is that I'm at my mother-in-laws. Gives me something to do to get out of the way..you know. But..you're right, I'll prolly say the heck w/ it and just paint the others. I'm gonna put them on my '93 245. (i think). I may put them on the '89 240

I refinished my Virgos two years ago - did the 220 wet/400 wet sanding, washed thoroughly and painted with light, multiple coats of Duplicolor Graphite Gray spray paint. After you have done the wheels, they will stay nice looking for quite some time, I have found....Paint is important, but like anything else, the prep work is most important...
