Found an ECU in a parts car--maybe. 200 1992

I've got a 1992 wagon w/LH 2.4 injection system that's running a 561 ECU. So far so good, buuut...I've seen many warnings on the board about 561s. I'd like a spare.

The owner of the parts car doesn't know much about Volvos. All he knows is that it runs good. Before I drive quite a ways on what could be a wild goose chase, can someone tell me whether a 1990 240 has LH 2.4, same as my 1992?

If so, it should have either a 561 or 951 ECU, right? Either would interchange with mine?

One other question: Someone here has reported that Volvo modified late production 561s before they switched to 951. The late production is supposed to be more reliable, and it can be identified by the color of the part # sticker.

Does the original version have a white sticker, and the modified version a pink sticker, or is it the other way around?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey

I don't blame you for wanting a spare if you can get one inexpensively. If nothing else, it's great to have one for diagnosis when you have a problem. An ECU is so easy to swap to confirm eliminate that as your issue.

But, I have to say that my friend has an '89 740 with 140K and the dread pink label 561 that is going fine. My spare it also a pink that I got out of a '90 with 145K at the pick-n-pull and it worked fine for a while in my car too. (When I bought my '89, it already had a 951 in it.)

My point is that there are a lot of still "good" pink labels out there and I wonder if maybe all the bad ones failed fairly early so the remaining ones can be considered relatively trustworthy.

Grab it anyway, it's always good to have a spare.

The 951 and 561 interchange. If it runs at all, it hasn't failed (yet).

I think the pink label 561 was first and it has been rumored that the white label 561 is an improved version. 951's are the 561's eplacement. My 92 came with a white label 561.
LH 2.4 was in 89 to 93 240's as well as 740's and 940's but I am not sure of the years. Probably any 740 or 940 with the 016 AMM.

I have used 556 and 571 in the 92 240. Other #'s that should also work are 928, 933, 935 937, 939, 946 and probably others. These are from 740 and 940 both 8 and 16 valve heads. Dan
