Common enough problem. About 2X1 inch white box? Mmm hmm, that's your fuel pump relay. Part number on newer ones and replacements is 3523608. Older ones can have a different number.

Make sure when you replace it, you clip it to something, so it doesn't get water in it again- that's likely what happened to that one. Been there twice with a friend's 87. The second time, I realized water was dripping from the wiper motor hole and filling the relay up, burning it out.

They're supposed to be clipped right to the firewall. You can tie them up to the other wires or whatever.

Grab one from any 85-93 240, any 740 gas engine, any 940. The 7s and 9s keep them in the center of the dash, front of the fusebox. All 240s have them in the same place. I always carry a spare in the glovebox.

While you're at it, replace your 25A fuse holder under the hood, right behind the battery. It feeds that relay, and for $3 it's cheap insurance against a breakdown.

That's your fuel pump relay. Yep, you need one, and they are available from the online parts sources and used at the scrap yards. Check the 700/900 FAQ at the top of the page under features,for some suggestions and tips to repair yours.

hi fuel pump relay, look closely with magnifing glass, i use jewelers loupe. you can see the cracks in the solder joints. heat em up and re-run the solder. also if possible make sure the connectors are tight when the relay is plugged back in. or buy a new one. good luck
