How does a starter die? 140-160 1973

I'm having odd starting symptoms. I get the click, but the engine doesn't crank.

The battery, however, is well charged.

I'm going to change out my battery cable terminals tomorrow (the positive is kind of loose on the battery post). But I wonder whether this symptom might be due to resistance from a dying starter, or maybe just the connection there is dirty.

All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Starter lives again! 140-160 1973

I changed the positive side of the battery cable and cleaned everything in sight and it spun right up.

It's always the simple stuff.

It's usually the simple stuff. However if the problem continues it's the solenoid, you can get a few more starts out of them by giving them a nice whack, or even using a screwdirver to bridge the two posts on the forward end of the starter, but eventually you need to get a rebuilt sarter, it's very common, same as the starter in the 240.

If you can remove and disassemble the solenoid and clean its internal
contacts you'll probably solve the problem. Sounds like it is engaging
but not making good enough contact to run the motor. (but other things
have similar symptoms, as Bob points out.)
If necessary I can give further instructions tomorrow.

Bad connections could do that. They can give you the same symptoms a weak battery.
