Help. Srry can't search archives. Do I have to remove the wheel bearings to replace the front struts? '89 240 200

According to my haynes manual it sounds like I have to take apart the whole front end almost to replace the Struts, including caliper, disc, front hub, wheel bearing assembly, backing plate, brake line bracket etc.
I thought that maybe there is an easier way. Can't you disconnect the brake lines from the caliper, the outer tie rod end from the tie rod, and the ball joint's three bolts and then unfasten the strut assembly from the top and drop it out? I plan on replacing the outer tie rod ends and ball joints at the same time as well as getting an alignment afterwards. I wasn't planning on taking out the wheel bearings and all that other stuff at the same time.

Sorry I seem to be unable use the search function on this awesome website. I am sure this has been covered before, if you for some reason can post previously written how-to's on this feel free to re post it.
For some reason doing wheel bearings always freaks me out.
Are there any other hardware related parts I should have on hand when replacing the front strut shock absorber units?
thanks in advance

Ditch the Haynes and invest in a Bentley 240 manual. If you had one now, you wouldn't have to be asking this question.

My 14 year-old Bentley is coming apart from use. The Haynes it replaced never gets touched anymore.

Heck no! Like the guy says, just lower that strut, get it out of the wheelwell, support it and then use spring compressors.

NO. You have to remove the wheel, but the trick is to get your front end high enough off the ground so you can depress the A-arm (with your foot) and get the top of the strut to tilt out of the wheel well. If you're careful, you won't have to disconnect the brake lines at all. Indeed the steering arm has to be pressed off, but the BJ's can remain installed if memory serves me right. Just be prepared to support the strut tube once it's pushed down and tilted out of the wheel well, so you don't strain the brake lines.

You gotta take it all apart. No worries, its not as hard as it may seem.

    Good luck.
