Window Tint Blues

I recently picked up a 91 240 for my son. Its a nice solid car, having spent most of its years in Tulsa,OK. I appreciate the fact that the dark window tint installed for the previous owner has preserved the dash and interior, but here in Michigan it is not legal. Anyone have tips for getting this stuff off?

I agree with the comment from the Michigan poster. Most states only prohibit tint from the front side windows and windshield, IF the car is equipped with left and right side view mirrors. The same rule as in a pickup: if you can see behind from both sides, you can legally drive the car with an obstructed rear view mirror.

Another important point to remember, if you remove the film from a side window that rolls up and down, don't raise / lower the window before you remove the adhesive from the glass. If the felt/rubber window wiper on the inner door panel gets the adhesive on it, you will basically reapply adhesive to the window every time you raise and lower it after that. I had to do this on windows that had professionally applied tint on them and the pros use a heavy adhesive that dries clear. It took a lot of work to get all of it off, the best tool was a single edge razor blade and windex. The adhesive comes off in a really gross, mucous like consistency.

You would be amazed at what an amazing solvent WD40 is. Removes old adhesive like nothing else, and it's fairly cheap and commonly available of course.

Spray right on or onto a rag first. Gets rid of old bumper stickers, state inspection stickers, really well!

Window Tint Blues -- WD-40?

I just want you all not to be as thick-headed as *I* was, using WD-40.
I used it inside a trunk, as I bent over and scrubbed away gunk.
You might use it INSIDE a car to scrub gooey windows?

My vision got blurred, and I saw halo's around light for quite a while.
That can't help the body, can it? :-)

Thanks for your input/caution on my post. I must admit that I did find your reply humorous. It reminded me of the old Cheech and Chong bit ...I saw God.

Window Tint Blues -- WD-40?

So THAT'S what God looks like?! The bottom of a WD-40 can?!

Maybe I'll stick to ammonia. Ha! I recently noticed that some nicks in window tint sheeting were getting larger (very slowly) as I cleaned them with Windex. THEN I read the bottle's label; doh! It contains some ammonia. A no-no.

Good luck! I also got a southern car recently, with what we northerners find a gloomy interior (tint)... and someone worked SO hard to make it that way!

I removed some from the tailgate window on an old Wagoneer I have. If it's warm, you may be able to peel the film off in large pieces, leaving the adhesive on the window. If you have tint on the rear window with defogger grid on it, a razor blade will ruin the circuit if you cut or scrape it. The side windows won't be a problem.

I used laquer thinner to remove the adhesive. Works great, but I don't know what it does to defogger grid since I didn't have any. Be careful, as it may attack plastic and paint.

A mixture of ammonia, dish detergent, and rubbing alcohol should remove it along with razor blades.

In Michigan, you are only prevented from having tint on the two front door windows.

If you have a lot of free time, get a heat gun and some razor blades.

If you're on the west side of the state, stop by and I'll give you a couple clear front windows for $10.
