1993 964 Engine Won't Start--Fuel Pump? 900 1993

Car was driving just fine but when I went to move it to the other side of the street (I live in New York) and it would crank but wouldn't fire. Plugs checked OK but it doesn't seem to be creating pressure in the fuel rail. Swapped relays to no effect. I'm pretty sure that it is the fuel pump and I figure might as well swap the fuel filter while I'm at it.

The filter has banjo fittings on either side any advice for taking these things off? Also, should I drop the entire pump/filter bracket or will it suffice to drop one side and bend it. It's stuck so whatever is quickest for now would be helpful.

There is a diagnostic pressure port on the back of the fuel rail. It has a "shraider valve" like a tire valve under the cap which looks like a metal tire valve cap. If you press on the valve stem you shoud get a squirt/spray of fuel if the pump is working. (No open flames of course!) The pressure should be over 40 PSI driving the squirt.

as odd as this may sound I had the problem where the car would crank and not start, tried a lot of things only to find out that the air inlet hose between the filter box and the throdle body was cracked so bad that the air for the engen was drawn throught the opening and not accross the air sensor near the filter box.

hope this is the cause of your problem, it is a nice easy and cheep fix

To confirm it is the fuel pump, check the fuse first, verify there is power to the spark plugs. Check by removing one plug and reconnect the coil and ground plug to see a spark, or use volt meter on test lead, located between cam and rpm sensors connections on the back of the head. Should show battery voltage with ignition switched on. Not having spark would shut down the fuel pumps.

The last time the car ran, was it for just a short period of time, just a few seconds or under a couple of minutes when cold? If so, could be overpumped lifters (lawn mower syndrome) plenty of info in the archives on that subject.

Fuel pump should run for a second or two when ignition key is first turned on, then shut off if engine is not cranked. Do you hear it start up?

Someone else will have to give you advice on the filter questions. I always have a mechanic do that for me. A mushroom cloud comes to mind everytime I consider doing it myself. Plus that little hard plastic hose is prone to cracking when bent.

Fuse was fine so I tried the "lawn mower syndrome" fix and all is now well. I had forgotten that I had moved it across the street the other day. No more of that from now on, promise. So, if anyone is following this thread here's the lawn mower syndrome fix:
      1) Make sure your battery is fully charged.

      2) Pull all your plugs and give the car an hour or so to think about life without plugs.

      3) Push the pedal to the floor and keep it there.

      4) Crank the ignition for a full minute (it's as scary as it sounds)

      5) The engine will begin firing in bursts about 30 seconds in, a little longer as time goes on. eventually the engine starts right up and runs like hell until the temp is up.

Thanks for the LMS tip you saved me $150.
