Weak points on 1988 740 turbo wagon? (long) 700

Hi everyone... new to the site. I have a saab and I was just given a 1988 volvo turbo wagon. I know it has some problems but I don't know the causes yet. I should be troubleshooting them this weekend... what should I know?

These are the two problems I'm aware of:

1) There was a slight bit of water in the oil at the last change. No noticeable difference in performance.

2) Started twice when I first got it but would die as soon as I turned on the lights or anything else electrical. My jump box swears the battery is charged and the engine sounded pretty good when it was running... what am I dealing with here? Alternator, I presume?

Are there any other major things that go bad on these cars with age? It is at 188k miles but I trust my swedish car makers. What is a good place to grab parts?

Thanks for all of your advice!

-joshua

In the 700/900 FAQ there is mention of a problem where the engine dies when the headlights are turned on.

Bad ground in the left front fender.

That area contains the power stage and a thing that looks like a 4-part ballast resistor. Clean up the grounds on both of these and clean their connectors and put dielectric grease in them. Techs often zip tie the connectors together as well.

In my '90 there is a large ground cable attached to one of the mounting bolts of the ABS, you should look at the ABS connections as well if you have ABS.

With our 744 Ti , the car stalled when the high beams were selected, cleaning the grounds cured the problem.

It would a good idea to clean and grease all the connectors in the engine compartment, and zip tie them where you can. Look at all the pins in each connector to make sure that they have not slipped out of place. In many cases, there is a tang that holds them in place. BTW, my brick has two ground straps that run from the valve cover to the firewall.

I have definately found that bad connections pop up if your brick is allowed to sit for some time.

problem 1- water in oil is never a good sign, but it could be condensation, guess best to wait and see, watch for overheating...(not a Volvo problem, but a sign of bad head gasket).

-2 Dubious about battery, a fully charged battery would have no problem with extra loads. Check the charging voltage with a voltmeter. if it's OK, then have the battery tested. If the charging voltage is not there, suspect worn alt. brushes, or maybe bad voltage regulator (bolted to back of alternator).

Hello Joshua; Congrats on the wagon! Check out the 700/900 FAQ in the drop down Features section at the top of the page. Loads of great info on these fine cars. Good luck!
