header pipe 200 1991

Hello Brickboarders,

I need to mount a new Header Pipe to the mount that hangs from the bellhousing.
Looks as though there is an old funky bolt through the flat-horizontal plate on the mount.
Do I drill it out and bolt the new header flat up against the plate?
Who out there has done this?
Thanks

TB

If I remember correctly there was some talk on the board about leaving that disconnect. The reason behind this (from some) is it may cause cracks at the Y. Do a search.

I replaced mine about 2 months ago. It had the threaded hole already in it. If you want to connect it then you will need to drill a hole and put a nut on the back side.

Where did you get the header pipe? I got mine from FCP, and the first one didn't match up right and sent it back. The 2nd one worked with some modification.

Good Luck.

It's a Starla/Walker from eeuroparts.com
Hoping it doesn't give me a hard time.
Thanks

Measure the replacement pipe first 200 1991

Be sure to measure the overall length of your replacement downpipe compared to the original. For my 1990, the Bosal replacement was 1-inch shorter than the original, and it pulled the entire system forward. I found this only AFTER the tail pipe had melted through the plastic fairing below the rear bumper!

That bolt is likely to be a real bear. I have gotten them apart using a long extension and socket from above. Most of the time they break, or round off, or you just have to grind them off. Gets very rusty.

I never reuse that mount because I think it's a royal pain. Others here use it and there's nothing wrong with that either. I just find that most of them are gone by now, and the ones that are left are in terrible shape.

BTW the three bolts on the flange should be 16mm. New copper nuts are available for a couple bucks from FCP Groton- well worth it.

Rob,
Thanks for the input.
I was going to replace this header pipe only because the mounting hardware on the header is rusted away to nothing and there is no longer any connection there.
While doing the cat/back replacement of parts, my mechanic friend whose lift we were using said, "that's your anchor, I'm suprised you haven't cracked the exhaust manifold"
It sounds as though your evperience is that it's not been a necessary 'anchor'
Correct?
