Power Steering fluid is GREY 700

'89 760 just under 200k. Power Steering fluid is grey. Haynes/OEM Manual, etc indicate that PS fluid does not require flushing/changing just topping off.

I'm considering replacing the fluid; however, looking for the simpliest route.

Anyone tried the turkey baster approach? Take a little out at a time - replace
it -- take more out - replace it, etc. Perhaps this can be accomplished without introducing air into the system?

Please advise.

Thanks!

SH#T I' never heard of that before!

is the car hard to steer?

you should empty the whole lot out and put new fluid in
you will have to introduce air to the system,

take the return line off and position it so it emties into a container
start the motor and let it idle and swich off when empty (dry running will
    damage the pump)
reconnect the return line and add new fluid
evacuate system air by turning steering wheel from side to side (the steering
will be stiff initially or may feel "lumpy" or intermittent but should come
    good)
once the steering feels normal, you're set!

of couse that there will be a small amount of old fluid but this is nothing
    to worry about,

If this happens again, theres somethin' seriously gone wrong
this is where experts should be called apon.

    good luck mate!

Thanks for all of the great input. Turns out this time around I went ahead and used the "turkey baster" approach however with some modification. I started by running the car, then turning it off and removing just enough fluid (about half of the reseviour) so not to introduce air into the system. Did this a number of times. Fluid improved. Then I decided just to let it run and idle -- as I changed more fluid out -- again just about half of the tank -- did this several times -- continued to improve. Then I decided just to drive the car to a lot where I could turn it lock to lock then change 1/2 fluid. Then drive again change half fluid. Repeated this several times. In the end I matched colour from res fluid to new fluid and the match is almost identical (started very very grey). Overall, I went thru a total of about 10 quarts -- it took a total of four+ hours. Did not have an assistant thru this process, did not introduce much air (if any) and did not jack the car off the ground. It appears that the fluid is remaining clean and the steering feels positive and solid.

Next time around, I'll probably apply the more traditional technique with assistant and flush by removing hose. I see where this would be quite a bit faster.

Thanks again for all of the input!

I know this has nothing to do with this subject

my farthers 740 has hard steering when you start driving off
and then will become intermittent and will then work properly

I nitially thought that this was lack of fluid it the reservior
but the fluid level is normal and the fluid itself is normal.

the other day it gave me one hell of a fright when I went to go around a
a slight corner at moderate speed and was very hard to steer resulting in
me ending up on the other side of the road!

the steering was working excellent beforehand. after that it worked
      properly

I have not used the car much since then!

has anybody heard of this before and do they know how to fix it?

Mine was black. Tried changing the whole resevoir using the turkey baster a couple of times, but soon it looked just as bad as before. Used the complete flush method in the FAQ and it has stayed looking good since.

It is still hard to steer when cold, though.

Use ATF for replacement fluid. Synthetic ATF if you want the the very best possible.

The method in the FAQ of pulling the return line and cranking the engine (disconnect ignition first) worked pretty good for me. Others will probably have more creative tips.

The way I do it is to disconnect the upper line on the reservoir, that's the return like, but a metal nipple in there with a hose clamp, the a clear hose on that. put the front end up on jackstands so you can turn the wheels without any effort. Run the clear hose to at least a 1.5 container, have at least 6 quarts of ATF already open. Have an assitant start the car and turn the wheels lock to lock without stopping at the stops. The fluid comes out pretty fast and the reservoir will run dry if you don't pay attention. Shut off when the fluid coming out is red, replace the hose and top off. If you didn't run the reservoir dry, there won't be any air in the system. It's also a good thing to do before replacing a rack.
