When is this light supposed to come on, and for how long, how does it know when to shut itself off?

I don't see it on when looking at it in my '85 760 GLE (frogger)

is the bulb change procedure for it the same as changing the bulbs for the rear ashtray?

The rear seatbelt warning light comes on with the ignition and goes off at the same time as the dashboard seatbelt warning light goes off i.e. when the car's driver puts their seatbelt on. As far as I can tell, only the driver's side seatbelt controls the seatbelt warning lights.

As for changing the warning light's bulb, it is exactly the same procedure as replacing the rear ashtray's i.e. remove rear ashtray and surround, locate bulbs, replace bulbs, reassemble. I know this as I have done it myself; Both bulbs are the same type and fitting them is dead easy :)

I am going through and being very anal about my car, I just replaced all the dash bulbs with red painted ones, I've found that red nail varnish does a helluva job of painting bulbs, if you dip them in it and let a good deal drip off, I have a nice red colour that doesn't appear pink. Going to replace them with red LEDs from LEDtronics in the next few months though, for a brighter and truer red.

Sounds cool! Interestingly you can buy special glass paint from art stores which will do the same job. Very useful for colouring clear indicator bulbs if they are to be fitted to clear lamp units.

I spent some time and effort replacing each and every cabin bulb (Including the seatbelt buckle illlumination bulbs) in my 745 last year and the results are most impressive. I also replaced the panel light dimmer at the weekend to stop the panel lights from flashing and going from normal brightness to full brightness at will. It's a Volvo driver pride thing...
