I called Quality Coaches on Monday to have my poor car towed to my garage. Tonight, the mechanic called at 6:30 and said that he cleaned the snow off and installed a new battery. While he was at it, he started it up and it ran. A little rough at first and then about one minute later it smoothed out... firing nicely on all 6, and fairly quiet. Still, lots of smoke. So he checks to see where all of the blow by is coming from. He squeezes a vacuum line next to the pump and majic, the smoke goes away, the rpm goes up a little. The vacuum pump no longer works! Easy fix.
So I told him to replace the ATE calipers, put on new rear rotors and pads, and get a new master cylinder (the one on there is bone dry and I don't trust it). Then I can drive it home. The cooling system works nicely, the car idled for 45 minutes. The gas gauge read empty, probably a new sending unit, fairly easy to do. There is a 1973 repair manual which should help me.
I will let everyone know when it gets here and I can inventory all of the problems!
Thanks everyone,
Old Volvos never die, they just need love,
Klaus

If you have not replaced the brake hoses, you need to do that. The OEM
hoses swell shut and act like a check valve so the brakes drag.

Thanks George,
The brake lines WILL be replaced along with the master cylinder. But I dont think I will pop for stainless steel. It would be nice to have a perf cam, but first things first. The Grand Dame needs to be safe on the street before she can show her stuff. Besides, it still needs a LOT of other things to become a dignified ride.

I'm not talking about the steel lines. Unless they are rusty or squashed,
they are probably OK. I'm referring to the rubber hoses.

How cool is that! I have a few old parts kicking around for that car, so let me know if you need anything! Also...I'd suggest getting new brake lines since you are replacing quite a number of hydraulic parts, the brake system is only as strong as its weakest link, and old dry-rotted rubber brake lines....well...
Many, mucho, congrats, congrats...a 164E is a cool car. I love their face...kinda like the old Rolls Royce of Volvo...they look distinguished AND friendly to me...
Ya know...sometimes the girl in me just bleeds through...

Thanks Chris,
When I saw your post, I called the restoration garage (they do English sports cars) and told them to replace all of the flexible brake lines. Really good advice since all of the DOT3 will be drained anyway.
When I get it home, I will look for a new hood release cable so I can get rid of the hanger wire sticking out of the grill! Good thing Borton Volvo is only a few miles from my house. I like their discount, besides a free car wash whenever I show up.

Dot 4!!!!! Dot 4!!!!!! No Dot 3!!!!!!! I may be old school on that, considering things I've read of late, but...
I ended up replacing master, proportioning valve, brake lines, and 2 calipers on a 240 that a kid put Dot 3 in...everything just kinda disengrated...and he wasn't a very nice younger individual. He copped an attitude with me, so when he said, "how was I to know that adding fluid wasn't normal on an old car (a 90 240) and that I needed to use Dot 4?" I couldn't have had more fun that day...I took the cap off, handed it to him, and said, "you CAN read, can't you?" Hmmm...I wonder who has to deal with him now...

DOT 4 it is. Sorry about that, my mechanic is doing the job for me so I don't screw it up. I just mentioned dot3 because I didn't realize dot4 had been invented in 1975 :) Live and learn,
Thanks Chris,

Yay!!!! Congratulations! Make sure you give it a nice good long drive before you park it again, just for fun. But make sure you don't venture too far. And have fun! I wanna drive a b30 sometime... Sounds like fun...

It is! Especially if you can get a wild cam in it. I've got one of IPD's
last B30 street perf cams and it can snap my neck even with the 3.31 rear end.
