940 Headlights Go Out 900 1991

I have a 940 SE Turbo Wagon. When I switch the headlights from the high beams to low beams the lights go out. This does not happen all the time though. I can get the high beams to come back on if i mess around with the stalk (switch) for a couple of second. Also, it seems if I turn the fog light on and off a couple of times the low beams will come back. Any ideas as to what is going on. Thanks.

In addition to repairing the relay, you might check your chassis grounds for corrosion. See the 700/900 FAQ under "circuits, relays" for information.

Dear jhsorensen66,

May this find you well. Yes.

(a) I believe your main headlight relay isfailing. It is on the Relay Block, behind front center console ashtray, Relay "K", front row (that closest to the passenger cabin), second from the left (driver's side, USA/Canada models). It is a Cube, and should be marked "K".

(b) the foglight relay (middle row, directly behind relay "K") may also be implicated.

I'd go to a salvage yard, preferrably one that lets you collect the parts you need, and gather 2 or 3 of each relay (it is unlikely that all three would be bad). Replace the suspect relay with one of the salvage yard relays. If the problem goes away, buy a brand new relay.

If not, post back.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
