Hope this isn't the beginning of a 'death' rattle! 900 1993

'93 945t

Over the past few months, I've noticed a weird noise whenever I'm at around 2,000 rpm and I back off the accellerator. As the RPMs drop, I hear this rattling sound, which subsides as (I presume), the general engine noise drops. Sometimes I can hear it slightly through the sound of the engine at a constant 2,000 rpm - but at lower and higher RPMs, it's not there. It definitely seems to be coming from the engine - not the exhaust or transmission, and only when in gear - if I rev the engine at a stop, I can't hear it at all.

Is this most likely just an "older car" quirky sound, or might it be valves or possibly signs of turbo failure around the corner? (seems to be coming more from the passenger side of the car, where the turbo is). Car still drives very well at 175k. Might anyone have experienced similar sounds?

Thanks for any input,

Ben

Check your transmission mount and engine mounts. Sound if they are going bad on you. Good luck

This will sound crazy to you but it happened to me a few years ago. Look down where the header pipe connects to the transmission. There is a bracket there that keeps the pipe stable. One of the clamps came off and landed between the two pipes and would rattle at different rpm`s. It drove me crazy for a couple of months until I saw what had happened and re-installed it. I have worked on cars, motorcycles and airplanes for a long time and it got by me I guess I was looking for something really big.

Good luck!

Lane

Yes those clamps have the tendency to rattle themselves loose. Happended to me as well...
