Problems removing auto-shift cover - please help! 200 1992

I went to remove my existing cover (to replace tan cover with black one) and figured out how to get to the guts of the auto shift box beneath it (easy), unscrewed the only two screws I could find on the right side (one with a ground running to it), but then realized that I didn't know what to do from there. I screwed those two screws back in, but when I went to start the car, I found that it wouldn't start. What did I do??

So I guess I have two questions: 1) How do you get the shift cover all the way off? 2) What did I do to my car?? Please help. . .

This isn't going to help your no-start, but I don't understand where you were working.

I've taken the Auto shifter cover off a '93 240 recently, and with the center "dust brush" off, there are only two screws at the front of the outer shell—one on each side and neither had a ground wire.

I hope it is in park 200 1992

Did you put the lever back in park before trying to restart it? I've done that before...

Yes, it's back in park and everything else is powering up, but I'm getting no ignition. . .

Gently pull back on the shifter while you try to crank. Don't pull it out of park...just gently. If it starts...then you've got a misaligned electrical contact strip on the right side of the shifter so that the car will know when you've got it in Park, Reverse, etc. If your car won't start now, then it thinks that you're in Reverse. Either gently push forward or gently pull back....the other alternative is to crank it in neutral.

If the electrical contact thingy is indeed mis-aligned, you can adjust it..but I'd check out your motor mounts and/or the tranny mount first.

Thanks a mil Cabbie2169. That's what it was - the electrical contact strip had come unseated/misaligned.

Still scratching my head about how to get the shift cover off though. . .

            Someone recently sawed a slit 200 1992

The knob is pressed on to the stalk. It is pulled off, or if that might result in injury when it suddenly comes loose, you can tap it from underneath with a wrench just spanning the stalk. A good tip is to put a sandwich bag over the knob first to catch the parts explosion.

Look in the archives for many, many posts on this, that will fill you in on what I've forgotten. In Bentley and also, I think in the gallery, is an exploded view of the "parts". Careful with the OD off button.
