Problems removing auto-shift cover - please help! 200 1992

I went to remove my existing cover (to replace tan cover with black one) and figured out how to get to the guts of the auto shift box beneath it (easy), unscrewed the only two screws I could find on the right side (one with a ground running to it), but then realized that I didn't know what to do from there. I screwed those two screws back in, but when I went to start the car, I found that it wouldn't start. What did I do??

So I guess I have two questions: 1) How do you get the shift cover all the way off? 2) What did I do to my car?? Please help. . .
