whine/grinding noise 200

This is a follow up to a post of a few weeks ago. My 92 240 (140000 miles) is making a noise at idle, that almost sounds like the whine of a jet engine at idle. I took off the alternator belts and PS belt and still had the noise. Having eliminated the alt, water pump, aux fan and PS, (and since the water pump only has about 15000 miles), I replaced the timing belt tensioner bearing, which was sloppy. Thjought that would be th we fix but still have the noise. I know, I did not take off the AC belt (not too easy to do) but the noise doesn't seem to be coming from that vicinity. So where do I go from here? Could a worn out timing belt make a whine/grind noise? Don't know if I can be causing any damage if I drive the car at all. Appreciate any advice

Augie,

I think it's a mistake to start a 2nd thread so soon, when you have several responses to the original one. You are apt to get a lot of duplication, and lose the continuity that was started earlier.

Other responders may want to check the original thread at

Sounds like the AC belt to me. I had a similar sound on my 1990 240DL.
Open the hood and take a look at the angle between the AC pulley and the
crankshaft pulley. If the two pulleys are not aligned correctly the
belt will make some noise, mine didn't squeal, it made the sound you
are describing. It's not as bad as it looks - 30 minutes to an hour to do.
Loosen power steering pump 13mm/10mm. Loosen AC compressor,
get the back bolt with a deep 13mm socket and some creativity.
Remove the splash pan, check the AC compressor bracket bushings.
Loosen lower bolts, re-align the compressor and tighten everything up.
It can be tricky to get the alignment just right, I had to do it two times before I got
the correct angle.

Another thought - you mentioned the sound wasn't come from
around the AC compressor. If the belt is not at the correct angle
the actual sound may be coming from the AC belt at the crankshaft
pulley.

Thanks for the advice. I will check out the ac belt and alignment.
