'80 242 GT - rear fog lamp ? 200 1980

My "semi-restoration" of a nice CA GT is almost done (alas, I have to replace the heater core in the spring !!!), but meantime, I'd like to get a rear fog lamp functioning. The rear lamp housing does not seem to have any blank sockets for a rear fog, as in my 850.

Has anyone had any success in rigging a functioning rear fog on the early 240, in the lamp housing itself ? I'd like to try to avoid if possible the aftermarket screw-on lamp (Hella, etc.), unless there's no other way....just doesn't look right on the car, IMHO.

On our 81 with 6-panel lights the cutout in the sheet metal is 30cm wide and on the 5-panel 83 it is 24cm. The black plastic panels that cover the bulbs and circuit boards are the same size in either car and that might fool someone.

Looks like the light units are not interchangeable.

Hello,

There was a dealer accessory rear fog lamp, but it was simply something that bolted to the rear bumper. Kinda unsightly on an otherwise clean 80 GT I would say.

You could do a conversion to the 6 panel style tailights that have a rear fog light socket built in.

I think (repeat: think) the cutout in the sheet metal is different for the 5 and 6 panel light assembly. I vaguely recall measuring it years ago on the 83 (5-panel) and the 81 (6). I'll double check and report back tomorrow...it's cold and dark out there now.

"You could do a conversion to the 6 panel style tailights that have a rear fog light socket built in. "

Hadn't thought of that route. Do you know offhand which years' 6-panel lights would fit an '80 ?

The only thing that gives me some pause is that it wouldn't really look "original", and I've been pretty successful in keeping it faithful. However, I have seen a non-US GT (Australia, maybe ??) on the Net somewhere that I do believe had those 6-panel lights, and it looked very nice ! Just saw it a few weeks ago -- also had a blacked-out rear panel, between the taillights. Looked real stud !

Hello,

I don't think the hole is any different size. Definetly worth checking before you start grabbing parts out of the junkers. Plus to make a clean install it might be worth grabbing the later style wiring harness that has the extra line for the fogs already in there. You could even get the decor panel to make it look really clean. The blacked out rear panel was a trim feature on the GLT's & Turbo models. Looks cool too!!!
