87, 740 GLE
When I turn the head light switch on first park position, the parking lights work. When I go to the second main lights position, everything goes out. While in that position if I pull on the signal for high beams, they light up but no dash light, till I let go then all goes out again. The lights will normally all go out when the ignition switch is turned off.
Any idea what failed? Any help would be appreciated.
I checked the fuses and will now go for the relay. Did all of the 740’s around that year have the auto off with the ignition or just the GLE.

    i would deff check the relay, i had one melt that did that exact same thing.
    and all 700's i have driven the light will go off with the key , this is great unless your trying to use the fog lights which also go off with the key.

      I had the same thing happen to me recently (1986 760T). At first I thought it was the relay. But, at the same time I had lost my wiper intermittent mode. Changing the relay didn't help. My local mechanic found a shorted wire in line from the light switch on the dash.

      I've read of others experiencing the exact same symptoms, so I hope this adds to the list of possible cures...
