undiagnosable turbo squeeling 700 1985

Hi all,

My brother inherited my '85 740 Ti (I've since upgraded to an '87 760 Ti+ :) ), and his turbo is screaming like a banshee, and it loses power at about the middle of the yellow.

He's checked all the vacuum lines and hoses, and none are broken. He took it to a turbo specialist, who replaced some lines that he missed, but said that the turbo itself was in great shape--bearings, housing and all. And still the problem persists.

One thing: my mother hit a felled tree (yes, a felled tree, in the middle of the road...no idea how) and sent a stick through the intercooler. Would that be the cause for such a fast escape of air and loss of boost? My father doesn't seem to think so, but he's never really done the turbo thing before, so...

We're at a loss...So he asked me to post for some input here.

Thanks

v

I have an B230FT (fits 85-89) intercooler for sale, original Volvo part, OEM,not aftermarket. It's in excellent condition. I have other turbo interconnect parts for this beast too.

I have an 87 740T (Garret) and have troubleshot leaks in the vacuum circuits and if you have a leak, it's THE PRIMARY cause of performance problems.

-the hole in the intercooler, even if it's a small one, is a major performance issue. You need to replace the intercooler. You couldtry to patch it but, you know how that goes.

Send me an email richardgeorge454@hotmail.com forthe Intercooler.

I have references from here, for the parts I have sold to people.

Absolutely...a hole in the intercooler is a path for pressurized intake air to escape. Depending on the damage to the intercooler, the opening may only be present during high boost conditions (i.e. when the pressure of the air is sufficient to open the hole in the intercooler). The air being forced out of the intercooler may make a loud screeching noise (air with a lot of energy flowing over/around an obstruction that can vibrate = noise), plus you will hear the noise from the blade-induced pressure pulses (the frequency of the noise will follow the rotational frequency of the turbo times the number of compressor blades).
