Volvo 240 Rear Brake Caliper Question regarding bracket 200

On all 240's 7?-1993 on the rear calipers there is a brakcet that is on the right side when you have removed the car and are looking at the caliper. This piece is held on with a 15mm? bolt. It does not seen to have any function other than maybe absorb vibration?

Any guesses?

Volvo 240 Rear Brake Caliper Question regarding bracket 200

If it's the piece I'm thinking of, I use it as a pivot point when I press the Brake Pad Pins back into position. I put the pins in the caliper and with a flat bar placed on the Pin end I pivot off of that piece and push the bar toward the gas tank and it acts as a fulcrum and presses the Pin into the Caliper.

Volvo 240 Rear Brake Caliper Question regarding bracket 200

Are you speaking of the rubber block that some of them have or the piece of cast iron that is actually a part of the caliper? The first one is a vibration dampner and I do not recall any of the cars coming stock with them, I installed a bunch of these back in the day. The other one, as far as I can tell, is one of the many safety features on the Volvo. If you get hit in the ass hard enough there are two structural members that sit on either side of the gas tank that come into play. They are triangular in shape and appear to be stamped. When you get hit these pieces drive forward and transmit the energy into those ears that are cast into the calipers. Now is this just coincidence and those ears are there just to dampen brake vibration and they just happen to be in the way during a serious rear end collision? I do not know but I have seen countless 200's that have either had them sheared off or are still intact and have had those triangle pieces stuffed right up into them.

Volvo 240 Rear Brake Caliper Question regarding bracket 200

I am speaking of the cast iron part bolted onto the calipers, now thinking about that and the pieces of angle by the gas tank it all makes sense. I need to remove those cast iron parts as I need the clearance on my 262c for rims.

I may grind them down so they are still in place but will let the rims spin, they need very little to fit.

Thanks for the help

Steve

Sounds like grinding them down would be the way to go. I have seen 240's that were rear ended and never repaired and those angle pieces just kind of wore a groove in the cast iron pieces. Do it in a well ventilated area, preferrably with a decent fan at your back, as I have heard on several occassions that cast iron filings are supposed to be some nasty stuff. Definitely not what you want to be breathing for sure.
