engine in the 960 900

Hi all - Was the engine the same in all editions of the 960? Off of some site I was searching I see that HP ratings are different between the 97 and prior models. Was it just a tweak, or was the engine actually different? In either case, pros-cons?

The B6304 I-6 was used in all US spec. 960/90 series from 1992-1998. (The name changed with the 1997.5 model year). Yes, 1997.5

In 1995, the cams were changed to produce a differnt torque curve that also produced less high end horsepower. 204HP vs 181HP. Torque numbers were almost the same at 197 vs. 199 (respectively) but the curve was flatter and came in stronger at a lower rpm. More useful for us slower driving US folk. Same 10.7:1 compression ratio, same 24 valves.

So, there was one version of the engine from 1992-94, and another version from 95-98. During that time period the engines went from Motronic 1.8 to Motronic 4.4 engine management systems, OBDI-OBDII, as well as different timing belt drive systems to increase TB change intervals from 20K to 70K.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks. That helped. So I am looking at a '97 w/107K miles. If I can't find documentation that the TB was changed at 70K as indicated, I guess I need to go ahead and do it anyway?

All new timing belts come with a sticker that gets placed somewhere in the engine compartment (usually the timing belt cover or the radiator support area) that provides a means for the installer of the new belt to document the date and mileage that the new belt was installed.

        Check under the hood.
