'90 240DL Misc. Unplugged wires/hoses 200 1990

I'm just wondering if maybe someone could ID some of these for me...

There is a rubber hose, about .75" in diameter coming out of the top of the intake manifold. It's slanted at about a 15 degree angle toward to passanger side. At the end of it, there is a plastic piece and then a little metal L-shaped piece. At the end of this metal piece, it is an open hole. If you hold your finger up to it you can feel it sucking on your finger. Anyone know if this is supposed to connect to anything? There is a small diameter hose coming out of the firewall that isn't connected to anything and is the perfect length to connect to this piece. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about this, as is the hose coming out of the manifold doesn't connect to anything it seems absolutely worthless.
Also, are there supposed to be any disconnected wires/connectors anywhere in the car? I've found a couple under the dash, one in the trunk, and a few in the engine compartment. The wires are just disconnected, sitting there, but I can't find anywhere where they could possibly go. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!

The little one plugs into the big one...

You should also find a 90-degree elbow made of small steel tubing on one or the other hose. The elbow attaches the two together.

Lots of unsued wires hanging around. They're either for diagnostic use (testing, etc.) or for accessories (such as power antenna, tachometer, lights, etc.) that your car may not have.

there are some electrical connectors that are test ports for testing different items (o2sensor and such). i suggest you get a hold of a bentleys service manual. i never had any 240 newer than 87 so i cant tell you exactly. good luck

You surmised correctly that the hose from the top of your intake manifold is supposed to connect to the hose that goes back to the firewall. I believe that is the vacuum source for the damper controls that direct the heater air flow to the defroster, dash vents or floor. I'm guessing that you don't have control over air flow right now?

The large plastic piece is a check valve. If you blow through it, air should blow toward the engine but not back the other way. If it leaks, wash it in warm soapy water. If it still leaks, replace it. A leaking check valve will cause you to loose air flow control (defrost) when you are going uphill (not good as you climb the mountain to go skiing).

As for the rest of the stuff, yes, there are always extra wires on a car that was sold in many countries in several option configurations. For example, there will be wires that go to where the Volvo insignias are snapped into the front fender between the wheel well and the front door. Those are for Euro side-marker turn lights. If you think wires and hoses might be important, and you have access to a digital camera, post pictures and we should be able to help you out.

Awesome! I don't have control over air flow and was wondering about this for some time. Thanks a lot for the quick response! I'll try it out and let you know the results!
