diagnosis needed 242gt 200

I am looking for someone in the wash. d.c. virginia maryland area to look at my 79 242gt and tell me what the heck is going on with my overdrive (wiring,solenoid,etc...etc...) if you or someone you know in the area knows a thing or two about 240's i could really use your help. I am willing to pay you to tell me the problem. or if you could recommend a garage that specializes in older 200,s that you would bring yours to that would be great... thanks so much in advance

It's an old car. Check the fuse box. The connections get loose or oxidize.

This is what ailed my overdrive.

No OD relay 200 1979

+12v leaves fuse 11 and goes to shifter switch. Switch closes, +12 goes 2 places:
1) to dash OD light
2) to 4th gear switch on tranny top.
If 4th gear switch is closed, +12v goes thru it to the Solenoid.
Solenoid goes "clunk".

The circuit can be tested with the car off. Just put shifter in 4th, turn key ON, try the switch. Should get dash light and Solenoid clunk.

Check the easiest stuff first. Mine was a loose wire underneath...
Good Luck,

Always start troubleshooting with the easiest fix first,

It's either the switch on the shifter or the solenoid. Try prying off that cover on top of the shifter, then you'll see the two wires hooked up to the OD switch. On the freeway, have a friend touch those two wires together when you are in 4th, it will drop down into OD if it is the switch. Otherwise, it's the relay.

Both of these have gone out before on my 79 242gt, so I'm assuming your problem is exactly the same!
