bad fuel pump???? what to do?? 200

ok heres the situation......83' 242 turbo sat for 5 yrs......will start up idles as 2000rpm for a moment and then wants to jus die. little (late) to no throttle response with gas pedal. i was told the fuel pump had been running high current before it sat for 5yrs. Would a bad fuel pump affect the throttle? Is there anything i can do to save the fuel pump.....clean it out, rebuild it, ect?? I'm gunna be traveling the performance route once i work out a few bugs and finish body work so would a performance fuel pump be ok to put on without other performance mods (right away) to accompany? if i have to get a new pump i'd much rather jus buy an upgraded one right off the bat than buyin a reg. one now and the other one later. But i dont want to burn out the performance pump or anything. and as far as a performance pump whats the best choice or what will fit my 240? So if u have any suggestions or anything it would be greatly appriciated. Thanks a million.

pull the connector off the mass airflow sensor. if it continues to idle, forget all the other advice here. then check for vacuum leaks and then check the (if it has one) idle air motor and throttle switch.

No AMM.... 200

It's an '83 240 turbo. No AMM.

The other advice here isn't all that bad so far.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about turbos, but if it wants to die immediately, I wouldn't think that it would be the pumps. But it wouldn't hurt to check fuel delivery, and it's better to check at the fuel return line, where you should get one liter (quart) in 30 sec. Can you hear the intank pump running at the filler spout? Is the main pump noisy? The main pump would have to be pretty far gone not to deliver at least enough to keep it idling.

As for an upgraded pump, I wouldn't think it would make much difference. The function of the main pump is to generate pressure, and the excess is just bled off to the fuel return line which carries it back to the tank. Bigger pump just means more fuel going back to the tank.

You'll probably get more information on the Turbo Bricks site if higher performance is the route you're going.

The easiest way to test your fuel pump, is to disconnect the fuel line going to the fuel filter (if you have a turbo it should be located in the engine bay). FUEL IS FLAMABLE, DO TEST AT YOUR OWN RISK.

You will need a friend!
1.) Disconnect hose to fuel filter.
2.) Get a 2 liter Soda jug.
3.) place hose into jug.
4.) have your friend hot wire the pumps using a bypass wire at the fuel pump relay.

That 2 liter jug should fill up within seconds, if it doesn't than you have a bad pump. But you could also have bad pressure, but I'm assuming you don't have a pressure tester. Stop test before jug fills!

You can test the intank pump the same way, except you will want to disconnect power to the main pump first. Also disconnect the fuel line going to the main pump, if any fuel comes out of the fuel line going to the main pump than intank pump is working.

My experience so far says you have a good pump. As mentioned earlier about your intake pump, that could be part of the problem, but if you have a full tank of gas you are probably fine. If the car was sitting for a while, you should have the tank drained and cleaned. If you continue to run the car on bad gas, you will burn out your pumps.

I personally would clean the throttle body (easy to do) and replace fuel injector seals (these can be difficult/fustrating). If the car starts but runs at a low idle, try these first. Also check vacum hoses.

sounds to me since the car has been idle for some time that you have sediment in your fuel system which initially starts up but then bogs, my vote is to clean out your fuel system, change fuel filter, even take off the tank and clean it.

Does it have a single pump under the car, or an additional one in the fuel tank?
The latter is known to fail, which puts extra load on the main pump. It could just be dirt clogging the in-tank strainer, or a blocked vent to the tank so that after a few minutes it can't suck any more fuel through.
I don't think the pumps are serviceable, other than cleaning/replacing the filters. They look like sealed units to me.
Check the notorious pump relay of course. As a test you could by-pass it and see if the pump(s) run and the symptons are still there.
