bad fuel pump???? what to do?? 200

ok heres the situation......83' 242 turbo sat for 5 yrs......will start up idles as 2000rpm for a moment and then wants to jus die. little (late) to no throttle response with gas pedal. i was told the fuel pump had been running high current before it sat for 5yrs. Would a bad fuel pump affect the throttle? Is there anything i can do to save the fuel pump.....clean it out, rebuild it, ect?? I'm gunna be traveling the performance route once i work out a few bugs and finish body work so would a performance fuel pump be ok to put on without other performance mods (right away) to accompany? if i have to get a new pump i'd much rather jus buy an upgraded one right off the bat than buyin a reg. one now and the other one later. But i dont want to burn out the performance pump or anything. and as far as a performance pump whats the best choice or what will fit my 240? So if u have any suggestions or anything it would be greatly appriciated. Thanks a million.

Ian..... proud owner an 88' 240DL sedan 198K and an 83' 240tubo (flathood) 126K.....The love affair has begun.....
