Stalling only in 1st gear 200 1993

Hello, after driving my 1993-245-2,3 GLE for more than 7 wonderfull years with no problems at all !! I recently have the following problem: when driving in first gear, pulling up very calm - no problem - when accellerating firmly in first gear she begins to stall as if she isn't getting enough gas.

The funny thing is that this happens only in 1st gear and never in any other gear, i can accelerate full speed and on it goes.

Added some injector-cleaning fluid with no result.

Checked the little black box and got a fault code 1-2-1 - something to do with the air-mass-meter.

Now before buying such an expensive piece of plastic as an AMM for very much Euro's, or visiting our local Volvo-Jewellers-shop (they're the same all over the world;) I would like to know if anybody at this forum knows the problem.

I hope I have described the problem sufficiently in my poor Dutch School English and that somebody has a solution.

Regards

Check the intake air duct (AMM to throttle body) for splits or cracks. I got similar behavior as a result of this problem. The engine torques over in its mounts when you give it throttle, resulting in the splits opening up and air bypassing the AMM. Immediate major lean stumble/stalling.

Thank Heaven for Brickboard and thank you Bob for your solution. It was a small crack in the hose after the air-mass-meter. I taped it and the problem is fixed!

Thanks again !

Frank

Glad to help - once in a while we hit the bullseye. If you decide to replace the duct I recommend AGAINST the aftermarket ones. I bought the one that IPD offered, and it didn't last long before it had two large splits in the bellows portion. It seems made of a thinner, softer plastic than OE.

I pulled one from a wreck in the yard and that's what's on the 83. With it out of the car, it's easy to check it carefully for cracks or for erosion of the plastic where it rubs on the strut tower. My IPD piece is in the landfill by now.
