Aftermarket wheels - Shakin all over 50 700

Ive installed 17x7 rims on my 86 760. They have an offset of 40mm. We had to put on 25mm adapters to clear the struts in the front. The car now has a wicked side to side shimmy at 50mph+. I have not taken it to be aligned yet but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with wheels set out that far.

If you check the center of a Volvo wheel, you will notice that it fits tightly around the hub of the axle. As a matter of fact, sometimes a coat of paint will keep you from putting the wheel on.

This tight fit is what assures that the wheel centered, NOT the lug nuts.

This system is called hub centric.

Even if you do get the wheels centered, I doubt that they will stay that way for long without that centering provided by the hub.

usualy a vibration at one speed is a balance issue.

Big question - are they both hub-centric and wheel-centric? If the answer is no for either (or both), then there's your culprit.

You can try to get it centered by doing all the tightening up in the air on both, but it will most likely take several tries to get it right. This is assuming that the wheel and adapter uses conical or ball seats too - if not, then you might just have to deal with the shimmy and the inconsistent tire wear that will result.

What do you mean by hub centric and wheel centric? Do they have to match ? I had centering lugs on the adapter aned also the wheels. Should I have the wheels balanced and aligned if they are the dame thing?

40mm offset - 25mm spacer is not that far from where you should be, which is about ~18mm. I don't think the offset is your problem. I would look at the following:

-What sort of wheel adapters did you buy? Are they both hub and wheel centric? I would not run any spacer that is not both hub and wheel centric out of safety concerns.

-Tire balance?

-Are you sure the wheels and tires are not out of round?

-Wheel alighment and general condition of front end parts. Wider wheels will put a bit more stress on things.
