AC not cold? 700 1990

Cooling effect only about 52 degrees if >90 outside...how can I improve? I plan on replacing the condensor and evaporator to start with...already on R134.

Had ac replaced several years ago and shop not best known for its work...original lasted 10 years and was great even after conversion to R134.

Thanks,
Gary
232,600 and is a great car!

Get an A/C pressure gauge. Your r134a really is just a little low. No need for a new condenser and evap.

Klas,
The pressure gauge shows @25 psi which is within range...could the high pressure switch be defective?
Thanks,
Gary

For the low pressure switch:
Engage compressor at 45psi
Disengage compressor at 23psi

If you are at 25psi, you need another can of r134a.

If it was good and degraded over time, you have a fine little leak and you are a bit low on r134... evap and condensor don't degrade with time on an unopened system.

Of course, a more efficient condensor would drop high side pressure and produce colder r134 after the orifice tube... but check if you have a condensor fan. Not sure maybe 1990 did not have one. If you do, it's just in front of the condensor behind the grill. Check its operation too. At idle, system running, the fan will eventually go on (triggered by high pressur eswitch on condensor).
A VOV can help too, but with r134 PROPER charge is KEY. It's not like R12 in that sense...

The gauge shows @25 psi which is within range and the aux fan(electric fan) in front of condensor only comes on as temp inc requires. I am using Evans Racing Coolant in this system which works so well that Volvo dealer had to block radiator to get a notable rise in temp to activate the temp switch for the aux fan operation.
I believe the condensor is the original one on this car which would also be an improvement. Could the high pressure switch be bad?
Thanks for info.
Gary
