this time it stalled out for good. 700 1985

Went to start my 740T this morning; it ran for maybe ten seconds then died. This isn't abnormal when it's cold, but it wouldn't start again. Came home and replaced the plugs and air filter. Checked, and I can't get a spark from the plugs or the plug wires. Replaced the coil (with a used one); still no spark. That's all the spare parts I have handy.

Thoughts? Is the fact that it started for a bit this morning significant? Is it possible I pulled or broke a bit of the ignition system getting the rear spark plug out?

Sorry to hear of your mishap. When my 245
jumped time the cam would no longer turn over
because it (the belt)turned into a toxic mass of yarn.
Did you check to see if it rotates? (the cam)
Best wishes, please let us know!

Do you have a spare power stage to pop in there to see if it's ok?

Yep. Power stage. Since I couldn't re-tow it with AAA I had Daisywagen, the 'good' local Volvo place it was towed to, throw in a new power stage ($120) and a set of plug/coil wires. With an hour of $85 labor it came to $315. Man, I wish I'd gone to Pik-A-Part. It's running pretty good now, but sometimes it idles neatly at 1000RPM and sometimes it 'searches' between 1400 and 1500 RPM. According to the Volvo mechanic I need to do the usual 30k routine maintenance stuff, replace some bits of the exhaust system, the right front brake caliper, and do the timing belt, but the car's in pretty good shape for being a $500 1985 740T with 208k. Now that I can make it there I'm going to have a friend of mine give me a hand with all of this upkeep.

So. I just called someone with a 1985 740T that needs a new wiring harness. I'm thinking a parts car is going to be my best option to keep my hunk of Swedish Iron rolling. The potential parts car has had its engine replaced recently; the PO let the oil get low. It would come with two Garret turbos, both of which match mine, as far as I can figure. Both cars are sedans, and it sounds like the parts car has been garaged more than mine has. However, it's an automatic, so I won't be able to steal transmission parts (except the overdrive bits, perhaps?). I told the guy I might be able to pay him $50 for the spare turbo or $250 for the whole car when payday rolls around. Is this worth bringing up to my landlord?

Don't know if it's worth bringing it up with your landloard or not. Is he a car buff by any chance???
If it's a touchy issue, make sure you present him with an exit stratigy like go ahed and call around the local boneyards and see what it will take for them to haul off a partially stripped car ahead of time a,d if it's going to cost out of pocket, you might offer to leave your landloard that much extra deposit, so he'll know that he won't get stuck disposing of a car.
