Charging R12 same as 134a ? 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 Gl and the magnetic clutch isn't kicking on, I'm assuming it just needs r12 since the guy I bought if from said it worked.

If you have r12 is it the same procedure when charging it as 134 ?

also, when I start it it usually takes about 5 turns to get it running, then I runs fine in idle but when I'm at a stop light in drive the idle is low and it oscillates up and down, is that normal....how do i adjust the idle speed?

thanks,

AC:
It is the same procedure to add R12 as it is to add R134a. Before you do, unhook the wire to the low pressure sensor and short it - the compressor should turn on. If not, the compressor may be at fault, or clutch. Are you sure that you have R12? A lot of people have converted their cars because of the cost of R12. FCPGroton has a conversion kit if you want to convert to R134a.

Idle speed should not be adjusted manually. Try turning off the AC and see if the idle goes back to normal. Clean the contacts for the idle control motor, or what ever it is called. Clean the throttle body, too.

If you do have a "134" system the fittings will be different than those in the old freon ones. Got a shock yesterday when I went to purchase some 134. The price has more than doubled. Two cans plus CA sales tax were over $27!! Ouch........ Has this happened elswhere??
