760 turbo question 700

Hi All,
I've got an '84 760 Turbo with 158K on it. Recently, it started using more fuel than usual. It used 3/4 of a tank for a 150 mile trip. It usually takes less than a half of a tank for this trip. I have to add one quart of oil every 3 or 400 miles (it doesn't leak much at all since I replaced the oil separator). The turbo seems to whine at a slightly higher pitch than it used to. The car seems to run fine and has power. I noticed when I was checking the oil that there's moisture building up on the top of the dipstick ( it's starting to corrode it). Plus, I think that the coolant looks a bit oily, but I'm not sure. There's no smoke at all from the exhaust though.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

    760 turbo question 700

' Took a look at the turbo hoses today. I took the one from the turbo to the intercooler off to look at it and found an oily grit inside of the hose. It was like that two weeks ago. I'm wondering where the grit is coming from.

    Cheers,
    Dave

    760 turbo question 700

Check the wastegate actuator hose - This is the smaller hose that comes off the turbocharger. Mine was blown clean off the connector, and it was whining like a semi. As the wastegate does not open, this condition will cause the turbo to generate too much boost - Have you noticed your turbo gauge moving off the charts if you step on the gas, or have you had the engine cut out during acceleration? (as the knock sensor screams for mercy when the turbo is shoving a few atmospheres through the airbox)

      M.R.

The gauge seems to be reading like it normally did. When I push down all the way on the gas, the needle stays within the yellow range. I'll check the hose that you mentioned.

      Thanks,
      Dave

    760 turbo question 700

Had the same problem with my 740 Turbo, used 2 gallons of fuel to go 3 miles!!! but still it didn't smoke, turned out to be a hole in one of the turbo hoses (turbo to Intercooler). At present, it is patched with duck tape so it still leaks but I am getting the same fuel economy as you are now (and the turbo whines more too). I am working on replacing it.

I'll check out those hoses today then and see what I find. The large hose that goes from the AMM to the turbo is fairly new, but I noticed that the other hoses are starting to look pretty shot. Was the hole obvious on the hose?

      Thanks,
      Dave

The hole was not very obvious as it was on the underside of the turbo intercooler intake hose. (not a very big hole either) but, with a friend stepping on the gas pedal, you could feel the air escaping. If your turbo hoses are very old and squashy then chances are you have a leak in one.

Well, I took the hose that you mentioned off today and it's coated with a oily grit inside of it. The hose was clean inside three weeks ago. I washed it out with degreaser and put it back on. What could this grit be?

      740 hose patch job 700

      Questions.
Did you also have condensation on the dipstick ..and did it stop after patching the hose the hose?
Also was the whine worse before the hole was patched?

Is this question for me? No I did not have any condensation on the dipstick before or after patching the hose. There was very little whine before the hose was patched (other than the normal turbo whine). It whines more after the patch, but only at 1/2 boost, pushing it to full boost and the whine goes away. I haven't used the car for a few weeks now as I am waithing to get some new hoses for it. Plus I have no time reference for life of Duck Tape.

          Duct tape 700

US Army spec. Manual 426; pg.32:
          Duct tape - life expectency.
          1. Depends on thickness applied.
          2. Exposure to oil and hot Volvo turbos will shorten life expectency to greater degree.
